Big News

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa (BBBSO) has over 600 uniquely inspiring stories to share each year. This is Jaxon’s.

Jaxon is a 14-year-old teenager with a passion for graphic design and art. He spends much of his time in his room, dedicatedly sketching and expressing himself through his creations. Despite his artistic passion, Jaxon’s academic performance has been hindered by challenges at school. He has faced disciplinary issues, conflicts with his siblings, and a tendency to skip classes, resulting in academic struggles across various subjects. Living in a single-parent household with three younger siblings, Jaxon’s mother has been actively seeking support to ensure his future is a success. This led her to explore mentorship programs offered by BBBSO.

Enter Dale, a young professional with a heart full of compassion and a desire to make a difference in the world.  Remembering what life was like for a young teen, Dale felt a calling to mentorship and sought out programs where he could share his life experiences with a young person in need. After a rigorous two-month application process, which included interviews, character assessments, professional and personal references, as well as police checks, Dale was finally matched with Jaxon in the spring of 2022.

From the moment they met, Dale and Jaxon formed a bond that transcended mere mentorship. Dale quickly recognized Jaxon’s talent and passion for art and design, and he made it his mission to nurture and encourage those gifts. Together, they embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth.

“Before Dale came into my life, I felt lost, like I was drifting without direction. But now, with his guidance, I feel like I’m finally finding my path.” – Jaxon

Over the years, Dale’s positive influence began to manifest in remarkable ways in Jaxon’s life. With Dale’s guidance and support, Jaxon began to turn his academic performance around. Now in grade 11, he looked forward to his classes and envisioned a future filled with possibilities. Inspired by his mentor, Jaxon set his sights on attending post-secondary, where he hoped to pursue his passion for animation.

But the transformation wasn’t just academic. Jaxon’s relationship with his family also began to improve. Through Dale’s mentorship, he learned valuable lessons about communication, empathy, and respect, which helped him mend fences with his siblings and Mom.

As time went on, Jaxon’s journey became a beacon of hope and inspiration for others. He went from being a troubled teenager with uncertain prospects to a shining example of resilience and determination. With Dale by his side, Jaxon embraced his potential and dared to dream big.

Jaxon showed me that being a mentor isn’t just about offering advice; it’s about being a consistent presence in someone’s life, showing them that they’re valued and believed in.” – Dale

And so, as they continue their journey together (BBBSO mentorship programs support young people up to the age of 24), Dale and Jaxon prove that with the right guidance and support, even troubled souls can find their way to success and happiness. They became living proof of the transformative power of mentorship, leaving an indelible mark on each other’s lives and the world around them.
