Thrive’s Free Shop Day Brings Support, Dignity, and Style to Over 80 Families in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON – May 9th, 2025

On Sunday, April 27th, Thrive Select Thrift transformed into more than just a thrift store—it became a place of hope, empowerment, and connection for 81 families and individuals in need across Ottawa. During Thrive’s Free Shop Day, attendees left with dignity, choice, and style—free of charge.

Over 1,600 pieces of clothing were gifted at no cost; 53 individual sized bags and 28 family sized bags filled with carefully selected, high-quality items. Each piece represented more than fabric—it symbolized support and a fresh start for those navigating adversity and transitional periods in their lives.

“This event directly supports our clients who come from a variety of situations—low-income families, newcomers without proper clothing, seniors experiencing adversity, those fleeing domestic abuse,” shared Kim, an Intake Worker at NROCRC. “We are very grateful for the support and positive impact we received from this event.”

The day brought together community members from key partner organizations including Nepean Rideau Osgoode Community Resource Centre (NROCRC), Christie Lake Kids, Carty House, Harmony House, The Door Youth Centre, Youth Services Bureau, and The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Ottawa..

“Events like this help our clients get what they need to support their transition and often support their children in getting ready for school,” said Meagan, an Outreach Worker from Harmony House. “It allows the women and moms we serve to feel refreshed and empowered as they restart or rebuild themselves.”

Free Shop Day was especially meaningful to those supporting newcomers and refugees. “The women we serve are often fleeing conflict and seeking asylum,” said Gabriella, Program Coordinator at Carty House. “This event has allowed them to explore styles and sizes, express themselves, and build their identities—something many have never had the opportunity to do before.”

For Hope Wood, Business Development Manager of Thrive Select Thrift, the event reaffirmed Thrive’s purpose: “Being able to support clients and agencies through clothing and style is a gift. When I spoke with someone from Carty House and heard how clothing would impact refugee women, my heart was full. Seeing and feeling the warmth and happiness in Thrive on Sunday renewed our purpose—to be a place for sustainable and affordable shopping with heart.”

Volunteers echoed the sentiment. Faith, a Thrive volunteer, reflected: “With the social climate the way it is, it’s so important to do our part. When my mom was a new mom, she often thrifted—something like this would’ve really helped her. This way, we’re paying it forward.”

Another volunteer, Cindy, put it simply: “It’s important that people in the community have a place to shop and not worry about the price tag. It allows them to feel happy, normal, and get what they need and want.”

At its core, Thrive’s Free Shop Day reflects Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa’s (BBBSO) mission to uplift youth and families not only through mentorship—but through real, tangible support. As Steph, Service Delivery Manager at BBBSO, shared: “It aligns perfectly with our overall mission. Beyond mentoring, it gives further purpose to Thrive Select Thrift as a beacon of the community.”

Thrive’s Free Shop Day was more than just a giveaway—it was a powerful reminder of what happens when a community comes together with kindness, purpose, and a shared commitment to each other.
